5 TIPS FOR FAMILY PHOTOS
We have taken our family photos every year since becoming parents and let me tell you, we have learned some must have tips to make the experience more enjoyable for all!
- Determine the look you are going for formal vs casual, indoors or outdoors. Look to Pinterest for inspiration. We chose to do a casual outdoor photo shoot this fall to show off the beautiful scenery in Vail, Colorado.
- Start planning your family outfit looks 1- 2 weeks prior to your scheduled photo shoot. This step is important, planning ahead eases the stress on us mamas the morning of. I typically choose 3 colors for my palette and then go shopping in each of our closets. Or I grab one of my favorite items from one of our closets and build the looks from there. Think coordinating not matching, classic not trendy, add texture, patterns and layers. Depending on their age, let your kids have a voice. My kids are older and they want to have an opinion on what they wear, so I let them choose between 2 outfits that I know they like.
- The day before the photo shoot I lay out all of the outfits on my bed, and make sure the clothes are clean and iron if necessary. Next, I organize and hang each outfit together, this step will make your morning of easy. The night before I pack a goody bag for kiddos and adults. Healthy snacks and sweet snacks ( for bribery ) nothing sticky or that can color the hands and or mouths. Water and maybe a little somethin’ somethin’ to keep mom and dad happy too!
- Day of, allow an extra hour to get your family ready. Trust me, we have learned this the hard way. Running behind and starting out stressed will cause tension during the photo shoot. Fill up those bellies! I never have meet a happy hungry kid!
- Bribe your kids! It doesn’t have to be a huge bribe, but what kid really wants to spend their Saturday or Sunday taking photos? Photos that they won’t even appreciate until much later in life. This year we offered our kids a movie night in exchange for engaged attitudes and patience. Bribe your husband too!
