Budget-Friendly Summer Updates For Your Living Room

5 Easy Ways to Freshen Up Your Living Room On A Budget

Image

When it comes to easy and budget-friendly living room update ideas, I am all about switching up your acccessories.  Swap out your pillows and throws, add some new coffee table books, layer a colorful rug on your existing rug and try out a trendy accent piece.  All of these little details have a big impact on how your living room looks and feels - all the while staying on a budget.

Navy.  It's one of my favorite colors and it's obvious when you come into my home.  As we enter into Summer, I love to add colors to reflect the season and right now I am crushing hard on everything blush.  So I went to my favorite home decor store, Salt Creek Home (small disclosure - I work there and keep reading there is a giveway!) and picked up some accessories to update my living room for the summer.

Updating your space doesn't have to break the bank but it should reflect your personal style.  Here are five tips to give your living room a little summer update -  on a budget your husband won't mind.

Tip One -  Freshen Up Your Throw Pillows

One of the easiet ways to update the living room is to swap out your throw pillows.  Throw pillows are a great way to add trendy / seasonal looks without a long term commitment.  I added two blush linen pillows and two light grey pillows with tassels from Salt Creek home,  to my existing navy ticking stripe pillows. The arrangement of colors instantly freshen up my couch.

Pro Tips

  • Mix-and-match patterns and textures.
  • Look for a variety of sizes to create a cozy pillow arrangement.
  • Include a couple large pillows- ideal for kids' floor seating.
  • Purchase pillow covers with zippers so they can be washed and can be easily swapped out for different seasons.

Tip Two - Add Texture With a Throw Blanket

When it comes to decorating, it truly is the little things that matter. Small details, like throw blankets, make all the difference in transforming your space. Aside from the practicality, watching Netflix and chilling,  throw blankets can visually change the entire look of your space.

Pro Tips

  • All About Texture.  Bring all of the coziness to your couch with a yummy textured throw blanket.
  • How to style your Throw Blanket?  Casually toss it over the arm of a sofa or chair.
  • Place coordinating throws on your couch and chairs to bring the style of your living room together.
  • Pop of Pattern.  A throw with an unexpected pattern or pop of color brings a fun element into your space.

Tip Three - Try Out A New Accent Piece

On a budget- friendly living room update, buying new furniture isn't in the budget.  But that doesn't mean you can't freshen up your home. Adding living room accents such as; ottomans, lamps, or end tables can totally change the space and for a fraction of the price.

I'm slightly obsessed with these crazy cute bohemian ottomans I picked up at Salt Creek Home.  Not only do they add texture and style, they offer additional seating options.  Win, Win.

Pro Tips

  • Determine your desired living room style (minimalist, modern, traditional, glam, bohemian, etc ) and choose an accent piece that will reflect it.
  • Swap out lighting.  Lighting has the ability to set a mood - update your living room by trading lampshades, painting the base of a floor lamp or incorporating a new ceiling fixture.
  • Try a new end table.  I love a good mix-and-match situation with my accent furniture.   Try a bold color, different style or an abstract object for your end table.
  • Add an ottoman.  Who doesn't want more seating in your living room?  Said, probably, no one.

Tip Four - Go Wild, Layer Rugs

Rugs are hugely important to the rooms they reside in.  And with so many options it can be tough to know what choice is the right one.  So why not choose a relatively neutral rug then layer seasonal rugs on top of it? - problem solved.

Layer pattern over neutral or pattern over pattern - you decide.  But the good news is there are tons of ways to make this look work in your home and at affordable prices.  I love this blush kilm rug from Salt Creek Home and especially love how it layers so effortlessly on my existing rug.  Layering rugs allows you to experiment with color without breaking the bank.

Pro Tips

  • Rugs in relations to furniture.  Experts recommend that all furniture sits atop the rug and that an ample border of flooring is seen around the rug's perimeter.
  • Highlight an Area.  Layering a smaller rug in the center of the room can help ground the space and give it definition.
  • Consider Color.  The key to layering rugs is to find colors that compliment each other.
  • Experiment with texture.  A cowhide rug on top of a sisal rug will add interest in a more subtle way.

Tip Five - Update Your Coffee Tablescape

Because the coffee table is the centerpiece of any living room, how it is styled can completely change the look of the overall space.  I don't want it to be styled too perfect or cluttered to the the point that there's no space left to make it practical - I mean, heaven forbid, where would the littles put their feet up for movie night?

Choosing accessories for your coffee table is where you can really have fun - books, candles, trays, decorative objects, you name it.  One of my favorite pieces is an antler my son found while shed hunting with our dog Rugby.  Let your personal style take center stage- right now I'm really feeling that feminine bohemian vibe.   Seriously, Salt Creek Home has the best home decor accessories and at affordable price points!

Pro Tips

  • Use stacks of books to raise objects off of the surface.

  • Combine items in groups of threes–preferably with a tall item, a shorter, more sculptural item, and a horizontal item.

  • Edit — this is a tough one for me, because I tend to overdo–I’m learning to edit until I achieve the right look for each space (although I still tend to go back and fiddle with things later.)

  • Balance hard and soft objects, as well as things with different textures, colors, tones, and styles.

  • Layer–placing some things in front of others and some off to the side–to create more depth and give the space a more natural look.
